What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an encrypted electronic form of a signature that can be used to sign digital documents and authenticate your identity online.

You need a DSC for secure online transactions like filing Income Tax Returns, GST returns, MCA (ROC) filings, e-tenders, PF registrations, and other government filings.

Any individual, business owner, company director, chartered accountant, or government employee can apply for a Digital Signature Certificate.

There are mainly three classes:

  • Class 1: For email communication (rarely used now)

  • Class 2: For filing GST, Income Tax, MCA (replaced with Class 3 as per new rules)

  • Class 3: Mandatory for e-Tendering, e-Auctions, and high-security portals

Common documents include:

A DSC is typically valid for 1 to 2 years, depending on the package you choose. You can renew it before the expiry date.
